A Letter to my Family

Sarah, Kristen, the two of you are everything that is good in the world all wrapped up into two wonderful packages. Each of you brings out the best of who I am and have helped me through the hardest of times. Two months ago today, I lost my boyfriend to a drunk driver and the two of you, whether you know it or not, you helped me through it, or else there’s a good change that I wouldn’t be still be here. You both shine so bright and in all reality, you give the sun some really good competition! The past two and a half years with the two of you have been the best two and a half years of my life. You taught me how to love and how to forgive. There have been times when I know I wasn’t the best, but I can honestly say that I’ve done my best to work through all of our problems. Sarah, two months ago, you brought the most amazing grandlittle into our family and she is absolutely perfect! Your love for her reminds me of the love that I have for you and Kristen.

Sarah: You are one of the strongest, most successful people that I know. Even when life gets you down, you still work your hardest to succeed and you always succeed without fail! You are so bright and your optimism helps me to do my best ever single day of my life.

Kristen: You’ve worked your butt off to finish with the Fire Academy and within the next few days, you’ll be graduating from the Academy while being a student, a sister, and a friend. You’re so brave and strong and I truly admire you for that!

Haley: My perfect grandlittle. Sarah is the best big that you could possibly have so be sure to let her lead you into the right direction! I know that you’re bound to do great things in this chapter! You’ve made a huge impact on me and I hope that you can say the same thing about me!

I love each of you more than I can or ever will be able to explain!

I’ll love you forever
I’ll like you for always
As long as I’m living

My Sunshine Family you’ll be.

What Being In Sorority Truly Means

Let me begin by saying, being in a sorority has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. This is not an exaggeration, I have no doubt that being a part of Phi Sigma Sigma – Delta Omega has changed my life.

Now, I know what you may be thinking, “every member of Greek Life says that” but the fact is, that it is truly nothing less than the truth for most Greeks, from cultural organizations to social ones, being Greek is an honor and privilege most of us are grateful we have.

Since graduating with my master’s this past May, I have realized (more than I had during my education) that people outside of Greek Life don’t understand the bond that Greeks share with their brothers or sisters, or fellow Greeks for that matter.

People outside the walls of Greek life have many preconceived ideas about what sorority or fraternity life is, and as citizen of this nation, they have a right to have those beliefs.

Conversely, I have the right to combat their misconceptions with my reality.

Greek life is not about parties or formals, or buying your friends; or belittling our new members, it truly is about friendship and unconditional love.

When you join a Greek Lettered organization, you are joining a group of men or women with like-minded ideals and beliefs. You are joining a family that provides the opportunities to allow you to grow and prosper; you are creating bonds with people and forming relationships that will last you a lifetime.

That is the truth about Greek life that every non-Greek seems to miss. It so easy for people on the other side of the Greek letters to only see and believe the superficial and negative connotations associate with Greek Life, and miss the underlining values that foster Greek Life organization.

That being said, it is important for Greeks to show others the true meaning of Greek Life to help change the way Greek Life is perceived.

Pay it Forward

On Monday I was having the most hectic day. In the midst of it I made a Starbucks run for some more caffeine. When I made it through the drive thru I was shocked and delighted to find that the person and front of me had paid for my drink and said "Merry Christmas' that gesture made my entire day. In a world when bad things are always happening its nice to see that there are still generous individuals around. I know that finals is a stressful time but I challenge you all to do something this week to make someones day or week a little better. When you do good, you feel good!

Something Special by Sarah

Welcome to Something by Sarah! This is an amazing monogram company from right in my school town of Kutztown! The products are flawless and one of my favorites is a coffee mug, that I have never seen before. She is an innovative owner who is always looking for more ideas.
"I started the company over the summer because I wanted to save up some money for graduate school, but I mostly wanted to do it because I am obsessed with monograms! I have been buying so many stickers, cups, and so much more from Etsy websites when the thought occurred. I began to make a lot of stuff for my cousin's rustic themed wedding last September which was awesome! Now, I want to start working with other sororities on campus to make things for them too!"
Spread the word to all of your friends in all sororities to try and work with this awesome business. Everything is quality and she puts her whole heart into everything she does!

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

I've been in a long distance relationship before and that was  difficult enough but a long distance friendship? That's something that I don't even want to think about.

Nearly two and a half years ago, my best friend went through recruitment and she ended up with a bid to my chapter. Then, I had no idea that she would be my best friend, nay, my soulmate, but over the past two and a half years, we became close through another sister and since then, we've been inseparable. She's the one that I go to for advice on just about any subject. She's my rock. She's the best friend that I've ever had.For the past two years, she and I have served on executive board together and needless to say, we're inseparable.

She's seen me at my best and has held me at my worst so what do you do when the future is going to have you split up?

She's an EMT and applying for jobs as an EMT before she goes to PA school and I'm wanting to get a job in law enforcement for a few years before I go to law school.

The job market, as most of us know, is tight. There aren't a whole lot of jobs in both of our job markets within the same cities, or at least not in most cities.

One of my biggest fears is that we'll be split up and that we'll ultimately drift apart.

I recently shared that fear with her and she shared this same fear, ultimately leading us to have to work to keep our friendship alive, which I don't think is going to be a problem because she's the mac to my cheese, the peanut butter to my jelly, and the best to my friend.

Even though I now that our friendship will never die, I'm honestly more nervous to have a long distance friendship than I was when I was in a long distance relationship.

I'm not the best at expressing my feelings but this girl is undeniably my best friend in the entire world! If anybody has seen How I Met Your Mother, I'm Ted and she's Marshall. We share the same thoughts and feelings, and in 17 days, we'll share the same graduation ceremony as we both receive our Bachelors degrees!

When you're in a sorority, people always say that you pay for your friends. No, I don't and even if that statement were true, I didn't pay nearly enough for them and I certainly didn't pay enough for my best friend. There's no amount of money in the world that adds up to what my best friend is worth and I'm truly glad that she's my best friend and sister!

Phi Sigma Sigma brought us together and nothing will be able to tear us apart!

Student Teaching

These past few weeks have flown by. I have a third grade classroom right outside of my town of Kutztown. These kids all have grown to be people I look forward to seeing day after day. Being on Thanksgiving break and not seeing them for five days felt beyond strange. I didn't like it at all. It is nuts to think that a little more than a month ago I did not know any one of these twenty one beautiful kids.
Every single one of them has a spark. This spark is for their character, their passion, their drive, and their learning ability. No, we are all not perfect, but it doesn't matter, with these kids they can be. They try so hard and push to make everything they do the best they can do. I loved working with the whole class teaching pronouns, and about holidays or working one on one trying to improve students multiplication.
These twenty one students help prove to myself that teaching is the job I was always supposed to do. I came into the classroom with doubts, and being unsure that I had worked three long, hard years studying something that I didn't know was for me. I learned how much of a true teacher I am. I have discipline, I have strength, I have patience, and I have lots and lots of love. I couldn't see another future for the rest of my life other than teaching. It is such a rewarding career and one I know I will look forward to for the rest of my life.
