9 Things You Miss Most When You're Away From Your Sorority

Whenever I go on vacation, it is so extremely depressing to be away from your sorority [I seriously mean this, even though going away on vacation is glorious.] While away, it's hard not to think about all the things you're missing out on especially if no one in your sorority is away with you. Here are the top 9 things that almost all sorority girls miss while they're away on vay-k.

1. Your Little[s]
-Bring on the countless, sappy texts back and forth to one another about how much you miss them and how you wish they were here [just pull more at our heartstrings why don't ya?]

2. Your Big
-No one gets you quite like your big, and when she's not around to keep you in check or to be the first person to come pick you up in your time of dire need, you feel a huge part of you missing.

3. Venting Sessions
-Venting sessions rarely occur in family settings while on vacation, and missing that quality girl time with your closest sisters leaves you without your daily fill of 4-1-1 gossip.

4. Meetings
-Maybe meetings aren't the most fun things to attend in a sorority, but they do keep you up to date on the latest material and events that are coming up and missing one really [for lack of a better term] sucks when you're out of the loop and struggling to read through your chapter minutes to catch up.

5. Going Out
-Being able to let loose and have a great time with the ones who get you the most is disheartening. I love going out with my closest sisters and having a great time; who else is going to dance at parties and bars with you? I can answer that for you- not many, and definitely not your family.

6. New Member Events
-These are prime times to hang out and get to know the associating members of your chapter in different settings, and missing out on new member events stinks, particularly if they're the super fun ones that you enjoyed so much during previous processes or your own.

7. Wearing Letters
-Depending on where you go on vacation it may be way too hot for that cute spirit jersey or adorable pair of long sleeve letters, so having to take a break from wearing letters is extremely difficult. [I try to wear a hat with letters on it because I start to have withdrawal from my beautiful twill babies; consult picture above].

8. Hanging out and Relaxing with Sisters
-Maybe you're relaxing on vacation, but it's always better when there's sisters there to keep you company. How much better would catching rays be with your sisters by your side? A lot.

9. Borrowing Clothes
-Without your sisters there, who are you going to borrow cute clothes from? Unfortunately you can't bring your sisters' wardrobes on vay-k with you so you have to do without them for a while.

Real Life: My Sister is Graduating High School

Perhaps the only thing crazier then being out of college for almost a full year is when you start taking your baby sister visits the colleges she is applying to for fall semester.

To think that my baby, and I emphasis the word BABY, sister will be a high school graduate and college freshman in a few short months is mind-boggling.

The past two months has been a series of college tours (including Pace), open houses, applications, and financial paperwork. As the only one in my immediate family who has graduated from college, I have taken it upon myself (with great pleasure, mind you) to help my sister find the perfect school for her.

To be honest, I wouldn’t have this any other way. I am glad I am helping her on this journey. While it is daunting, frustrating, and sometimes downright scary, it is an important part of every young adult’s life and I am happy to be by my sister’s side as embarks on this adventure.

I have been there every step of the way thus far and intended to continue to be there until she decides on the perfect college for her (I am not going to lie- I would love for her to go to Pace too but at the end of the day she needs to pick what’s best for her)

As many people would agree, college was one of the greatest experiences of my life, therefore, I want my sister to not only get an amazing education that will challenge her to become the best teacher she can be, but also to provide her with the tools to truly leave college as a well- rounded leader who can achieve whatever she sets her mind to.  I believe that a full college experience can do that.

So as we continue on our tours and wait to hear back from schools, I sit her typing as a very nervous but excited big sister, and I couldn’t be happier.

Love Being in a Sorority? There's a Way You Can Do It Professionally!

Sisterhood events, semi-formals, recruitment, philanthropy work. Sororities really offer some of the best experiences in college. But why let the fun end there? There are many ways to keep the exciting memories coming after the first four years. You can join the local alumnae chapter or volunteer as a chapter advisor or chaperone your chapter's dances. These opportunities can be very rewarding, but there is a way to have all of this AND get paid!

Have you ever had a consultant visit your chapter? Those positions are typically contracted full time jobs for recent graduates. I graduated this past May, and received a job right out of college as a Leadership Development Consultant for Phi Sigma Sigma. As I was spending my last semester going to my internship in New York City, attending all of my classes, participating in sorority events, and doing my homework full of reading, writing papers, and preparing for exams, I frantically searched for full time jobs. I started hearing about an opportunity to be a traveling consultant for Phi Sigma Sigma after I had already applied to countless jobs. Even though working for my sorority was not my plan for after graduation, I decided to apply and see what could happen. So far, being a consultant has been a unique and exhilarating experience!

For Phi Sigma Sigma and many other Greek organizations, qualifications include being a graduate in good standing with the fraternity, having strong written and oral communication skills, and having the ability to foster and demonstrate teamwork and cooperation. Being a consultant means motivating and inspiring others to make the most of their collegiate experience while fostering leadership and positive growth.

In return for the hard work advising and educating members on chapter operations and recruitment, this position sharpens many professional skills such as project and budget management, conflict resolution, event planning, and public speaking. This temporary position is a great stepping stone into any field because of these invaluable skills.

OK, now for the real perks of the job. Like the title states, this is an opportunity to be a professional sorority woman! Even though I am a representative from Headquarters, I get all the perks of sorority life. I attend fun events for various chapters like a Zumba class with froyo for a health and wellness event, and Make a Wish parties for philanthropy work, and even recruitment video shoots. Not to mention all of the great conferences and training sessions with the headquarters staff! Plus, I am always getting countless free Phi Sig swag. Most of all, I get to see the positive change I make on these chapters. I develop a bond with the sisters who look up to me.

If you are looking for an exciting adventure like this, now is the time to apply for next year. Ask your advisor or headquarters staff about work opportunities, and see what you can do to continue your sorority experience!
