Five Ways to Make Your Post Grad Apartment Feel Like Home

At 24 years old, I am at the stage in my life where I am always on the move. Between going to job A to job B, meeting with my boss to go over my day, the frequent wedding or family shoot, I generally leave in the morning around 9:45 am and usually don’t get home until damn close to 11:30.

Once I get home, I quickly shower and get ready for bed, only to lay awake for at least a good half hour, watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia, until my brain finally wears down and I can sleep.

Then I wake up and do it again.

Despite this, I sometimes get a day off. Those days, while fleeting, are my chance to enjoy my home (and time with my fiancée) for more than just a bed, but as more importantly, as a secure place that makes everything okay!!

Though in many ways, my home has become mainly a place to crash and my car has begun looking more and more like I live in it, the best part of those days off is having time to actually enjoy being in a place designed to make me feel relaxed and at ease.

Since many people, specifically people whom have just started in their careers, have adapted to this nomadic lifestyle, it is easy to forget to take the time to make your apartment feel like home, so when you are there you feel safe, secure, and relaxed.

Here is a list of 5 easy ways to make your apartment “home”:

1. Light: Lights is a great way to make your place feel more relaxing. From windows, to string lights, the options are endless, so make sure you brighten up your space and you will feel right at home in no time.

2. Photo frames: Photos are always a great way to bring a personal touch to your home. The photos are visually appealing and allow for you to reflect on good times.  Add a couple of cool frames and fun pictures  and you will be all set!

3. A designated spot to eat: Sometimes it is the little things, like sitting at the kitchen table to eat, that makes us feel connected to a location. It usually reminds up to slow down and focus.

4, Fun décor:
Little things like great throw pillows, an awesome couch cover, a few cute canvas prints, is all you need to make a space feel personalized.  Use your apartment to reflect who you are and do that with décor.

5. Netflix
Nothing says relaxing at home like curling up on the couch binge watching your favorite show with some wine and ice cream. So skip out on basic cable and subscribe to Netflix, there will always be something to watch!!

What Your Mother Doesn't Tell You About: Going Greek

What Your Mother Doesn't Tell You About: Going Greek

You've seen it on TV. You've read about it in magazines. You've probably even seen these people on your college campus. You guessed it, I'm talking about the men and women of Greek Life. The leaders, scholars, philanthropists, and friends who make your college experience one worth living. Let me take you back to the first week of your freshman year in college, that was five years ago for me. You probably lived on campus, went to freshman orientation, and met some pretty cool people called your roommates. You might have even lived with your bestie from high school. My first week of freshman year was literally the worst week of my life. I go to a university that is less than 30 minutes away from my hometown. So, naturally, I thought commuting from home would be way better than living on campus because there would be so much more room for activities at my house (step brothers? get it? anyone?). Anyway, I began my first day of class with no new, cool, awesome friends that lived in my dorm hall. There were freshman orientations for students who lived on campus the weekend before classes started and commuters could attend those events too but I refused to attend those fun, inviting, probably really great events that I should have. So, back to that first semester. I knew I wanted to go Greek. I wanted to join a sorority, particularly one of the sororities on my campus that I am legacy to. I met a few cool people the first couple of weeks of school but we were just "in class" friends and nothing more. I had been dying for the day to come when I could receive a bid from my legacy sorority, run home to them, and live happily ever after. Fall 2010 recruitment came and I'm not really sure if I was shy or if I just expected to be handed this set of beautifully crafted letters but I did not put forth the effort that recruitment period. I probably wasn't ready to join a sorority even though I thought I 100% was. I came back out during Winter 2011 for recruitment. This time, it was better for me but I still had the same, common misconception that letters would just appear in front of me and life would be sunshine and daisies. While I did receive a bid to my legacy sorority I did not choose to become a PNM (potential new member) of their organization. Why? Why was this not what I thought it would be? Why did I walk away from something I had wanted so badly for so many years? What your mother doesn't tell you about going Greek is that you have to FIND your HOME. You can't base your decision off of what sorority your grandma, your mom, or your sister were in because everyone is different, weird right? I spent the rest of my freshman year and most of my summer trying to transfer to my university's rival school. When that wasn't in the cards for me, I found myself starting my second year at the same university I hated, still with no new friends. I had missed out on a lot by this point in my college career. Sure, I had been to a few parties freshman year but I was missing out on the experience of having real, true friends. So, I spent a lot of time my first semester of my second year in college visiting my friends from high school who went to other universities. Why? Because oddly enough, most of them were Greek. They were having the time of their lives with their sisters if they were in a sorority or their brothers if they were in a fraternity. They had found their homes which was something I thought I had no chance of finding at my university. Now, when I say "home" I don't mean a literal house in which you live - I mean an extension of yourself, a family, a group of people to support you no matter what. I sound like this was all about making friends but really it was about finding my place and making myself happy. Okay so, back on track, first semester of my second year. I met a girl in my 300 level creative writing class, we'll call her Marissa. Marissa was part of this local sorority I had never heard of on my campus, Kappa Tau Epsilon. Marissa was their recruitment chair and encouraged that I check KTE out the following semester. I was blind to the local sorority world because I grew up in a family of NPC (national panhellenic conference) sorority women. Before talking with Marissa, I thought local sororities were made up and not real things, like, they didn't really exist. I was completely and entirely wrong. Winter 2012, I gave it a shot and I checked it out. I went to all of the recruitment events of this local sorority. The very first girl I met when I walked into KTE's recruitment was a girl who would later become my big but we'll talk about her in a different post.

My big and I (after I already knew she was my big but we can pretend I didn't know).
I instantly had a connection with her, a connection I cannot put in to words. After walking into the room and meeting many of the other girls that first day, I knew I had found exactly where I belonged. And so, I began my local sorority (which really isn't too different than a national sorority) journey with Kappa Tau Epsilon. Flash forward to present day - I am starting my sixth year in college and my fourth year as a sister of Kappa Tau Epsilon. I am currently KTE's recruitment chair and this is my second time serving on our executive board. I could not be happier to be such a big part of the potential new members' recruitment process. I am very excited to meet the girls coming through recruitment this fall and I'm delighted I get to experience my last Fall recruitment as recruitment chair.

KTE taking a break to be silly while preparing for Fall 2015 recruitment.

What your mother doesn't tell you about going Greek is that it is not an instant process. Sometimes it takes time and effort. You might have to try and try again before you find your home or you might click with girls of a specific chapter immediately and never look back. The point is, take a risk. Experience what is out there. Have an open mind. Take a chance. Going Greek is by far the best thing I've ever done in my life and I bet it will be the best thing you do in yours too.

Proud to Be Able to Write My Future

Writing has always been a passion of mine, from making up terrible fables as a young kid, to growing up through schooling and always enjoying language arts classes, and now as an English major/journalism minor, I'm finally realizing that I get to write my own future. Words are such a powerful thing, and if you're ever bored or lonely I 100% recommend a pinterest search session of positive quotes and you'll be amazed at what you find. This is besides the point, what I'm really here to tell you is that writing, which is such a creative activity, has brought me so much joy this past year.

I have had the pleasure of starting my own personal blog, which I will continue to better and improve, and the pleasure of writing on here for all you Srat ladies out there who care a little too much for glitter or crafting like myself. Unfortunately, this will be my last post on SGT for some time and I say that because I hope to one day rejoin the SGT team once I go out and explore the world for a while. I will be embarking on a new creative internship in my favorite city in the entire world, NYC this summer and will continue to explore my abilities as a blogger on my own personal blog. I have also recently finished out my junior year of college which has been one of the best years of my college career. I have been able to express myself so much this year and I couldn't be more thankful, especially to all of you who read my posts and continue to support writing as a creative art form (because let me tell you it's exciting and rewarding however extremely stressful to stay on your toes).

(My year at a glance)

My sorority has brought me so much joy, and being able to write about it (and reading my other fellow SGT ladies'  posts) only makes me cherish those memories in college and in my organization that much more. I have been able to write about experiences that keep them fresh and new in my mind, allowing me to reminisce on all the great times I've had this year. To name a few: becoming a big sister, getting rosebuds in my sorority, working as a position holder within my organization, participating in my second greek week, dancing and choreographing homecoming and so much more. This year has brought me so much joy and I could not be more thankful for all the experiences I have been able to have from being a college student.

If you're not a writer, there's always ways for you to get those creative juices flowing (and no I don't mean just writing random stories or blogging) but organizing and inventing your life. You can write your own life and have the ability to hold onto those writings and look back on all your experiences and accomplishments. Here's my advice:

- Start a quote book
~I started a quote book my freshman year of college and have enjoyed reading through it whenever I have some down time, it's an extremely and positive way to keep yourself in an uplifting mindset, and it's a place for you to keep all of your favorite quotes in one spot.

- Make a Bucket List
~Every summer I create a bucket list with my best friend and we try to fill up the piece of paper with as many fun (and sometimes ridiculous) things we can think of and then look back on our summer to see how much we have accomplished. It's a great way to keep track of everything you've accomplished over the course of your summer and a great memento as years pass to look back on.

- Journal
~I know this may seem a bit tedious for those of you who don't enjoy writing, but believe me when I say it's one of the best ways to keep track of your thoughts. It's great to look back and reflect on how far you've come.

Hopefully you take these suggestions into your own life and begin writing your own. For now this is a see you later. I have enjoyed writing for all you fabulous ladies and thank you to my SGT team for the support! Have an amazing summer and go out there and explore!

xoxo - Ali

How to Travel Alone This Summer

For many, summertime is the perfect opportunity to have a little get away. If you're like me, you have to actually travel to get where friends and family are and 98% of the time I'm doing it alone. This past week, I found myself flying back to my hometown of Pittsburgh to visit. I have no trouble breezing through a busy airport by myself because I've done it countless times since I was young. But it dawned on me that many young women may not have had that opportunity growing up. So if you find yourself traveling alone this summer, here are a few tips to hopefully make it run a bit smoother for you!

  • Airport Size - Many airports are downright huge. It can be so stressful when you find yourself arriving at one gate and have to run to the complete opposite end of the airport, especially if you have a connecting flight. The night before you leave, get online and check out a map of the airport. You probably won't know what gate you'll be coming into, but at least get on and familiarize yourself with the airport so you don't find yourself lost and feeling stranded.
  • Wear something comfortable - I always find myself opting for a comfortable pair of jeans and a letter shirt #sororitygirlproblems. But where something you'll feel comfortable in because you're probably going to find yourself just sitting around, whether it's on an airplane, waiting for your flight, or waiting in baggage claim. Wear comfortable shoes because I'd be more than willing to bet you're going to be doing some walking.
  • Pack early - Don't be like me and wait until a few hours before your flight to pack. Lay everything out and figure out exactly what you're going to need. If you wait until the last minute to pack, you may get to your destination and realize you forgot to pack some essentials.
  • Check into your flight within 24 hours of your flight leaving - Nowadays, you can easily check into your flight online which saves you the hassle of having to deal with checking in at the airport and adding more time to your wait. If you check in online, you can have your boarding pass emailed or text straight to your smartphone and use that to check in. This means you can head straight to security and get on your way faster. For iPhone users, if you check in online, it will give you the option to add your boarding pass to your "Passbook" app which will then give you reminders of when your flight will begin boarding. Oh Apple, how much easier you make my life.
  • Bring things to keep you occupied - Again, you're going to have downtime. Don't just sit on your phone and drain the battery because you may need it later on. Bring magazines, a book, a tablet or computer to watch movies, homework, etc.
  • Be aware of your surroundings - I can't stress ENOUGH how important this is! Don't be the girl walking through the airport mindlessly scrolling Twitter. If you aren't aware of what's going on around you, you could very easily have items go missing or even worse, you could go missing. Unfortunately it is a very real scenario. So PAY ATTENTION to where you are, what you're doing, and who's around you!
So tell us, what do you think? Do you have any travel tips you'd like to add? Comment below and share them with us!

5 Makeup Products Worth the Splurge

Makeup can be extremely pricey, and if you're anything like me, I buy too much makeup than any one person should ever accumulate. Granted, I do have a beauty/lifestyle blog which I try to use to justify my spending habits on mass amounts of makeup but I'm here to tell you that from trial and error there are certain products that are worth the splurge!

1. A Good Matte Bronzer
My Recommendations: Benefit Hula Bronzer, Chanel Healthy Glow Sheer Color, The Body Shop Honey Bronzer
- I recommend splurging on a great bronzer because it's something that you'll get use out of all year round. It's a product that's easily buildable, and won't go bad like other makeup products.

2. A Signature Lipstick
My Recommendations: Mac Cosmetics Lipsticks, YSL Lipsticks
-Finding that signature color is totally up to you and what you're drawn to. As far as a signature color goes I would stick to something that enhances your lip color like a pinky nude, that works with your complexion. If you go into any makeup store they'd be happy to help you find one and they're usually spot on with what they suggest for you!

3. A volumizing and Separating Mascara
My Recommendations: Benefit Roller Lash, Eyeko Skinny Masacara, The Balm What's Your Type Mascara
-Mascara is the one makeup product that if you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one makeup product this would be it. It instantly makes you look 100 times more awake and brightens up your entire eye area. If you don't wear eyeshadow wear mascara, it's worth the splurge and completes your entire look.

4. Setting Spray
My Recommendations: Urban Decay All Nighter Spray, Mac Fix +
-Setting sprays are a must in the hot weather because you'll find your makeup melting off your face about half way through the day. Do not play around with setting sprays if you don't want to look like a melting fudge sicle as the day goes on.

5. Face Wash
My Recommendations: Bliss Fabulous Foaming Facial Wash, Any Body Shop face washes
-Your complexion is extremely important, it's creating the base for the rest of your makeup and you want it to be as smooth and healthy as possible. Try to find a face wash that works the best for you that can be followed up with a nice moisturizer perfect for your skin type. You want to keep your face free of blemishes in order to be able to wear makeup that doesn't look caked on.

Preparing for Senior Year

To say I'm scared of senior year is an understatement. College has come and gone in the blink of an eye and although I most likely will not be graduating on time due to dreams I want to pursue while still a college student, it's getting more real as time goes on. I recently picked my schedule for next semester, unfortunately I got stuck with an 8:30 (the ones I try to avoid) and got jipped out of a class that fulfills the language requirement which I still haven't completed.

I've been freaking out about the logistics of where I'll be living next year, which will be the campus apartments, and having to rely mostly on the shuttle system and stressing me out. I do not trust the shuttle system at my school for several reasons. 1, The drivers are rude as hell, they never come on time 2, they never update the shuttle app on the phone to tell you when they're arriving and 3, there are so many people and students who rely on the shuttles when there's not enough of them on duty. Waiting for a shuttle not only to get to class; meaning I'm going to have to wake up extra early to get there on time, but the fact that catching one to get back the apartments is like the anchovy scene from the first season of Spongebob. If you don't know what this is I will enlighten you below:

Aside from worrying about getting to and from class, I will be very excited to start being able to have my own kitchen and not have to get a meal plan that consists of the school's laxative laced food. (I learned this today actually that food at most schools is laced with laxatives to stop students from getting food poisoning and then suing the school; shoutout to my sorority sister for telling me this tidbit of day-brightening info haha), oh yeah did I mention it's illegal? Yea I had no idea this was a thing.

(Me as spongebob making my way to the shuttle hahaha)

I'm looking forward to senior year and reapplying for the Disney College program, something I have had my heart set on since I graduated high school, and I will be reapplying again and hopefully won't mess up any of the interviewing process and get to work in the happiest place on earth. I'm also excited to see what more exciting things my sorority will have to offer me, and having the thought in the back of my mind that I'll one day be leaving my sorority and graduating scares the absolute crap out of me. I wish I joined sooner because it has made my college career what it is.

For now, transitioning into Senior year is going to be a big, exciting, and scary step, but I'm excited to see where my future college career takes me. I will keep you all updated on new and exciting things happening!

"Outside" by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding Can Be Consider a Sorority Anthem!

The other day I was driving to work, nothing unusual, and the song “Outside” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding started playing on z100.

So I did what I always do, I sang along.

As I was singing (badly I might add), I realized that I was starting to think about how I felt in my sorority after graduation, about leaving my chapter, at being on the “outside”, an alumni sister, not an active sister.

While I am sure this song was most like not written to describe the feelings on recent sorority graduates, it really does describe what it is like being a new graduate of a sorority and in many ways tells you what you need to hear about it.

The main statement in the entire song, which is repeated several times, is as follows:

“I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside "

The line “we did everything right, now I am on the outside” stands out to me because as sorority women, we made the right choice to join and participate in our chapters, now that we are moving on and we have to let the women who followed, the women we helped select and mold, take over the chapter as we watch from a safe distance.

While it is not as dramatic as the song sounds, as alumni we are still very active in our chapters, I know I still am, it reminds up that at the end of the day that our time as a college sorority women is official behind us, and we now have to help our chapters grow and prosper outside the walls of active sisterhood.

Needless to say, now every time I hear the song I can’t help but think of being alumni in a sorority.

Take a listen and let #sgt know if you hear it too!

Utilizing Etsy; Why This Website is God Sent for Sorority Girls

Etsy, ah the site of all sites to find the coolest greek wear and random items to fit any one of your many needs and desires. When I first discovered etsy, back in high school, the only thing I really ever searched for was jewelry. But etsy has expanded so much and has been an amazing blessing for big sorority sisters alike. When I crossed into my sorority I took a chance and started searching Phi Sigma Sigma or greek clothing, items, jewelry etc. just to see what I would find. I wasn't expecting anything of it, I figured there would be really weird items carved out of wood and knick knacks like that and opposite of what I expected happened; etsy is my holy grail. The amount of sorority and greek letter items they have available on their site is amazing; I couldn't tell (nor do I want to tell you lol) how much money I've spent on greek apparel through etsy.

For sorority girls, I'm sure you've heard of somethinggreek.com I love their site, they make awesome stuff but their patterns were getting outdated and boring to me, I wanted something new and more up to date and etsy had exactly what I was looking for. Everything from vera bradley prints, to lilly prints, to disney prints, everything I could have ever asked for an more. I've purchased countless shirts, hats, sweatshirts, quarter zips, etc. and I've never been disappointed with anything I've bought off of etsy.

I would even recommend finding items that are monogrammed which I have been obsessed with and then once you receive them you can bring them to your local store where you usually get letters made and they can embroider and put letters on it on top of the fact that it already has your monogram. (I did this with my big!)

Here are some of my favorite stores:
  • UniversityShop
  • thesororityspot
  • LPEdesigns
  • TheGreekInkPress
  • TheTurnipSeed
  • GreekLetters13

Top 5 Books You Must Read at Some Point (And Will Actually Enjoy)

I'm an English major, so you'd assume that I'd suggest you some really literature-y books to read, well I'm here to say no. The books that are the most interesting are not Shakespeare, Mark Twain or any of that nonsense, but books that actually keep you entertained and intrigued. These are five books you will definitely want to read because they're just plain amazing.

1. Nice is Just a Place in France By Betches Love This
-This book is absolutely hilarious, if you have not read it or heard of them you need to first of all check out their website betcheslovethis.com because you'll actually die of hysteria. This book is so incredibly true that you cannot stop laughing. It's a great mellow read that will definitely keep you laughing.

2. Girl Boss By Sophia Amoruso
-Amazing book for all you ladies out there who are struggling with what you want to do as a future career. This book is so down to earth and relatable on so many levels. Amoruso, the owner of Nasty Gal website which revenues millions of dollars in sales is so inspiring and explains her story from the ground up and how she ended up going from someone lost in the world, to a successful entrepreneur.

3. The Fault in Our Stars By John Greene
-Yes typical girl book but I don't care this book is absolutely amazing. It's a tear jerker without being too "Nicholas Sparks-y" and exhibits what life is really about and the true meaning of love. If you want a chick flick-y novel this book is definitely for you.

4. The Woman I Wanted to Be By Diane von Furstenburg
-Very similar to Amoruso's book about how Diane became super successful [I'm still in the process of reading] however this book is amazing. I fell in love with her after watching her show on E! picking her new global brand ambassador and she's one of the cutest European women and she's so insanely talented.

5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
-I apologize if Harry Potter is not for you but my god I will never get over this series. [No I haven't read more than just the first one but I am OBSESSED with the movies]. This book is so amazing to read and I know people say to watch the movie after the book, but this book is just great. For me nothing will ever beat the first movie/book.

9 Things You Miss Most When You're Away From Your Sorority

Whenever I go on vacation, it is so extremely depressing to be away from your sorority [I seriously mean this, even though going away on vacation is glorious.] While away, it's hard not to think about all the things you're missing out on especially if no one in your sorority is away with you. Here are the top 9 things that almost all sorority girls miss while they're away on vay-k.

1. Your Little[s]
-Bring on the countless, sappy texts back and forth to one another about how much you miss them and how you wish they were here [just pull more at our heartstrings why don't ya?]

2. Your Big
-No one gets you quite like your big, and when she's not around to keep you in check or to be the first person to come pick you up in your time of dire need, you feel a huge part of you missing.

3. Venting Sessions
-Venting sessions rarely occur in family settings while on vacation, and missing that quality girl time with your closest sisters leaves you without your daily fill of 4-1-1 gossip.

4. Meetings
-Maybe meetings aren't the most fun things to attend in a sorority, but they do keep you up to date on the latest material and events that are coming up and missing one really [for lack of a better term] sucks when you're out of the loop and struggling to read through your chapter minutes to catch up.

5. Going Out
-Being able to let loose and have a great time with the ones who get you the most is disheartening. I love going out with my closest sisters and having a great time; who else is going to dance at parties and bars with you? I can answer that for you- not many, and definitely not your family.

6. New Member Events
-These are prime times to hang out and get to know the associating members of your chapter in different settings, and missing out on new member events stinks, particularly if they're the super fun ones that you enjoyed so much during previous processes or your own.

7. Wearing Letters
-Depending on where you go on vacation it may be way too hot for that cute spirit jersey or adorable pair of long sleeve letters, so having to take a break from wearing letters is extremely difficult. [I try to wear a hat with letters on it because I start to have withdrawal from my beautiful twill babies; consult picture above].

8. Hanging out and Relaxing with Sisters
-Maybe you're relaxing on vacation, but it's always better when there's sisters there to keep you company. How much better would catching rays be with your sisters by your side? A lot.

9. Borrowing Clothes
-Without your sisters there, who are you going to borrow cute clothes from? Unfortunately you can't bring your sisters' wardrobes on vay-k with you so you have to do without them for a while.

When The Going Gets Tough

Something that has been a struggle for me lately is balancing my sorority with my classes. No I'm not failing, my grades aren't suffering terribly, however they're definitely not as high as they have been previous semesters. There is something so unsatisfying about getting B's on literally every, single assignment. It makes me feel for a lack of a better word, mediocre. However, what I know is that there's clearly no one to blame but myself.

I love my sorority so much, and it is the hardest thing to focus on classes when there's so many fun and exciting things going on within my chapter. I have been crafting non-stop; for my two perfect littles, worrying about what I need to get done for events coming up, and trying to focus my attention on running my own blog and writing for you guys on here.

I always tell people that the name of my major should be changed to the "art of bullshitting" because I would say I definitely would receive a masters in that. What I need to regain is my self-discipline, I need to force myself to go to the gym more, I need to focus more time on school, and be mindful about the time I need to allot to my sorority. But it's not easy, and it is hands-down one of the most difficult things I've ever tried to juggle in my life.

I need to try to put more effort into my school work because I don't want to settle for B's, I want the feeling of getting an A and knowing I earned it. I currently have a group project coming up for one of my classes and I'm so incredibly nervous for it because I haven't even read the book yet. [English major probs]. On top of that the past week has been so difficult for me with my Math class I'm taking which is supposed to be "so" easy but is definitely not easy for someone like me who is not so great at Math.

I guess what I'm getting at in this post is that these next few weeks will be interesting to see how everything plays out. I'm learning stuff along the way, and I'm perfectly okay with that I just don't want to see any aspect of my life suffer because of any of the rest of them. With the end of our new member class's process coming up, some projects to accomplish, I'm interested to see how everything pans out.
