Using College to Determine Who You Are

When you look back at your life, college should always rank as one of the best experiences you have ever had. While the reasons may seem obvious (friends, sorority events, education, parities, etc.) the true reason is because it will help determine who you are and mold you into who you will be.

When I entered college, I was a high school graduate who wasn’t entirely sure of who I was and I what I wanted to achieve through out my life.

Sure, I had ideas, passions if you will, I knew I wanted to see the world, I knew I wanted to do something more than a 9am to 5pm job in a tiny cubical in a dark building, I knew that I wanted to do something “important”, but beyond that, I was lost.

As I made my way through class after class, course after course, event after event, year after year, I slowly became aware of who I was a person and thus what I wanted to do and where I eventually saw myself.

Throughout my time at Pace, I was able to formulate a very broad but clear idea of what I wanted to do in life based on who I am to the core.  I determined that what I wanted more than anything was to “move” people with my artwork, I wanted to foster emotion by creating something beautiful!

So as you continue into the spring semester, remember that every experience during your time at your university will help you become attuned to who you are and thus carve a path for you to reach your ultimate goals and thus happiness.

Mark Twain once said, Explore, Dream, Discover, and I believe no statement rings truer. So use college as an opportunity to try everything you can; join clubs, go to events, meet new people, travel to new places; go through college trying to figure out who you are, what you want to do, and who you will become!
