Social Media and the Perception of Greek Life

On Monday, while I was scrolling through the newsfeed on my facebook page, I saw a status posted by Alicia Scott, Grand Archon of my sorority Phi Sigma Sigma.

Now I am not delusional, I am well aware of the power and importance of social interaction that websites and apps like Facebook and Instagram provides. Social Media has become an important part of every college student’s life. Not only does it provide surplus academic resource materials for students, act as an additional news source, offers entertainment, helps in marketing a thought or product, and create a way to track one’s progression through life. Social media additionally allows for people to make connections and foster those connections with people, from potential employers to long lost friends, across the globe.

However, as I read the post I realized that Alicia Scott made a very good point. As members of not only our organizations but Greek Life in general, it is important to realize that we are the “face” of our chapters and thus our actions not only reflect who we are but others perception of our organizations.

Now there are two sides of that coin, the good and the bad. So in the end, it all depends on what moments in our lives we decide to post. So the next time you are thinking about posting something takes the time to not only considers your image, but the image of your organization.  Is it really something that reflects the best qualities you have to offer or is it something that will leave a negative impression of you.
